Why cycling for secondary schools?
Cycling programmes give secondary schools a practical way to support Transition Year, PE, wellbeing, CSPE, and sustainability goals. In addition, they help students build the confidence to cycle independently to school, part‑time work, college, and sports, while reinforcing safer behaviour on Irish roads.
- Real‑world commuting skills:road positioning, and interacting with everyday traffic.
- Health and wellbeing: building regular physical activity into daily life.
- Safety and responsibility: visibility, signalling, and sharing the road respectfully.
- Climate action in practice: choosing the bike instead of the car for shorter journeys.
Cycle Right Stage 1 for Secondary Schools
For secondary schools we currently deliver Cycle Right Stage 1. It is the national standard introductory cycling course in Ireland. Stage 1 suits mixed‑ability TY or junior/senior cycle groups. We deliver it on‑site at your school, using a mix of classroom and yard sessions.
A full Stage 1 programme typically includes:
- Classroom theory – approx. 2 hours
Road safety principles, rules of the road, helmet fit, visibility, and route planning presented in an age‑appropriate way. - Practical yard sessions – 6 hours
Using their own bikes, pupils learn skills in a traffic‑free environment, including starting and stopping, controlled braking, signalling, observation, and basic hazard awareness.
We usually schedule these sessions over several weeks to match your timetable. Practical modules run in blocks of at least 60 minutes so students get meaningful time on the bike. Training is in a safe school yard so less experienced cyclists can build confidence before being asked to manage more complex situations.
Bike maintenance workshops for TY & senior cycle
Alongside Cycle Right, Cyclopath offers hands‑on bike maintenance workshops for Transition Year and senior cycle students. These sessions give teenagers practical skills to keep their bikes safe, roadworthy, and ready for daily use. They also support active travel and independent commuting
Typical workshop outcomes include:
- Carrying out a simple safety check before a journey.
- Fixing a puncture and dealing with basic roadside issues.
- Checking and adjusting brakes, tyres, and chain condition.
- Understanding how to look after a commuter bike between services.
Workshops can run as a stand‑alone programme or as a short series alongside your Cycle Right Stage 1 programme, depending on your timetable and group size. They fit naturally into TY modules focused on life skills, wellbeing, and sustainability.
Pricing, what’s included and equipment
You can book Cycle Right Stage 1 and bike maintenance as separate modules or as a combined package for your year group. We will provide a clear per‑student or per‑group price based on your class sizes, number of sessions, and location.
We work around your existing timetable, breaks, and yard availability, and can run back‑to‑back sessions across a full school day to maximise participation.
Students are expected to bring their own bikes so we can check their roadworthiness and ensure they learn on the bicycle they actually use day to day.
