Look, Think, Decide: Cycling Road Awareness
An observation and discussion activity for primary school pupils. Practise noticing risks and making safe decisions before any on-road cycling.
Activity 1 · Spot the hazards
From a safe place away from traffic, identify parked cars, driveways, junctions, pedestrians, heavy vehicles and places where visibility is limited. What might change suddenly?
Activity 2 · Look behind
In a safe traffic-free practice area with adult supervision, practise looking over a shoulder while keeping a straight line. Discuss why cyclists need to know what is behind them.
Activity 3 · Signals and decisions
Talk through when cyclists might need to signal. Looking, signalling and deciding must never replace checking that a manoeuvre is safe. Practise only in a traffic-free space.
Activity 4 · Traffic signs and signals
On a supervised walk, find a stop sign, a yield sign, traffic lights and road markings if available. Discuss what each means for different road users.
Activity 5 · The safe choice
Scenario: a parked van blocks your view of the road. What can you see? What can you not see? Why is stopping and asking a responsible adult safer than guessing?
Reflection · Three things I noticed
Write or discuss: one hazard I spotted; one reason to look behind; one safe decision I can make as a pedestrian or cyclist.
Remember: This is an off-road learning activity, not permission or a readiness assessment for independent road cycling. In Cycle Right, on-road participation is only for pupils assessed as ready by instructors, in the context of the road environment.
