The Two-Minute Bicycle Safety Check
A simple, child-friendly check for families and schools. Use it before practising cycling skills or setting off with an adult.
1. Tyres and wheels
Are the tyres firm and correctly inflated? Do the wheels spin freely without rubbing or wobbling? If unsure, ask an adult.
2. Brakes
Check that both brakes work before riding. Each brake lever should slow or stop its wheel. If a brake feels loose or does not work, do not ride.
3. Steering and handlebars
Hold the front wheel steady and check that the handlebars are secure and turn smoothly. Check that the grips are secure.
4. Chain, pedals and saddle
Check that the chain is in place, the pedals turn and the saddle is secure. Keep fingers and loose clothing away from moving parts.
5. Helmet and clothing
Wear a correctly fitted helmet for training. Check the straps and buckle, tie loose laces and avoid clothing that could catch in the wheels.
6. Stop, tell, fix
Found a problem? Stop and tell an adult. Have the bike repaired or checked before riding. A quick check does not replace regular maintenance.
